Midlife weight gain...it's not your fault


A common frustration among women during perimenopause is weight gain especially around the middle.

The 'calories in/calories out' is antiquated advice and does not consider hormones, digestion, environment, mineral status, and stress. .

The multi-billion-dollar diet industry would like to make you think otherwise -that weight loss is about willpower and motivation.

However, we can't deny that our bodies shift during midlife even when you haven't changed a thing.

There are several reasons:

✅ Hormonal shifts: our estrogen dips and promotes abdominal fat storage

✅ Increase in insulin resistance and leptin which leads to inflammation and can make fat loss that much harder

✅ Decades of under-eating and over-exercising leads to metabolic resistance and/or adaptation

✅ Dip in GLP-1 production due to drops in estrogen (GLP-1 production declines during perimenopause)

✅ Thyroid starts to become sluggish due to decreasing progesterone

Where to start?

  • Monitor you lab trends: metabolism, inflammation and thyroid (we do a full blood panel on all our clients)
  • Support digestion by increasing naturally occurring GLP-1. You can read more about that here.
  • Support your body with sleeping and eating enough (>1500 calories - for most of you it is closer to 2000 calories)
  • If you have been dealing with long term stress and exhaustion - this could mean a 30-day pause on heavy exercise
  • Make sure you are lifting heavy weights (>15lb):
    • We want heavy progressive overload to grow lean muscle mass. Muscle is your metabolic powerhouse.
  • Bringing in HRT to help counteract declining hormone levels
  • Minerals, minerals, minerals....sodium, magnesium & potassium are some of the biggest players in the energy game. If you haven't had these checked - you are missing out! Minerals are spark plugs for the metabolism. Metabolism = Energy
