Is HRT right for me?

Comments you might hear about HRT:

  • "Your hot flashes will go away - you just need to wait it out"
  • "HRT causes breast cancer"
  • "Get a fan"
  • "HRT won't help with your mood"
  • "Menopause is natural"
  • "You can only be on HRT for a short period"
  • "You are only 37 yrs old - you are too young for HRT or menopause"

Other symptoms that don't fall under the 'typical' menopause challenges:

  • Anxiety/depression
  • Poor sleep
  • Joint pain
  • Hair loss
  • Brain fog
  • Constipation or reflux
  • Burning tongue
  • Frequent urination

Deciding to take HRT (hormone replacement therapy) is a personal choice. And finding a trusted source to make an informed decision is very challenging. There are many doctors that still use the outdated recommendations for HRT.

Don't assume your regular OB/GYN or PCP is knowledgeable about menopausal care.

Just because they can write an Rx for HRT or know how to deliver babies does not make them an expert in menopausal care.

Can't I just take something 'natural' for menopausal symptoms?

Sure you can. You can take black cohosh, wild yam and/or vitex. You can do cold plunges, practice meditation, take HIIT classes or diet. But it cannot take the place of your ovaries. They may help some with symptom management but in order to have true symptom relief hormones need to be taken...for life.

To paraphrase Dr. Mary Claire Haver:

Just because menopause is natural doesn't mean it isn't harmful.

Menopause is a complex psychophysiological transition and affects every organ in the body.

Once a woman goes through menopause she is at risk for developing osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and dementia/Alzheimer's.

Beyond the brain, bone, and heart problems some women are not willing to accept a lifetime of dry vaginas, joint pain, brain fog, and low energy.

Take some time to decide what is right for you. Only YOU can make that decision on how you want to spend your menopausal years.

Back to Basics: Progesterone At some point in your early forties or even late thirties, you will start to make less progesterone due to infrequent ovulation. To make progesterone, you must ovulate. Perimenopause can start 5-10 years before menopause, and it is these tumultuous years when women need extra support. The loss in progesterone can bring a whole...
